rcnsw welcomes regional housing report
Regional Cities NSW (RCNS) has welcomed the Regional Housing Taskforce’s Recommendation’s Report and government’s response in relation to this critical issue.
There is no doubt that regional city living is on the agenda as a result of the pandemic. The effects of this are being felt by all our member cities – each is struggling with the availability of social, affordable and rental stock required to support the growing jobs market and also those vulnerable members of our communities.
In releasing the report, it was clear that the Taskforce agreed with many of RCNSW’s recommendations including:
1. Activate surplus government (crown) land: that can be used for diverse housing options and better use of the Government Property Index;
2. Supporting the delivery of enabling infrastructure: through introducing reforms to infrastructure contributions; and
3. Investigating mechanisms to incentivise development: of residential zoned land to address land banking and assist the timely release of new housing supply.
The Taskforce also acknowledged the need to review the impacts of the short-term rental accommodation market which is creating supply issues in cities with strong visitation demand.
As part of the two presentations given by Taskforce Chair Garry Fielding at RCNSW board meetings, it was clear that local and state government must work closely to develop solutions. RCNSW will continue to engage with the government on this issue.
